Online Piano Lessons

In addition to traditional in-person lessons, a student can now take piano lessons anywhere with an internet connection. Online lessons are best suited for students that have had some previous experience. Although there is no substitute for traditional lessons, it is possible to learn the piano in a solely online setting. Age 9 and up is recommended for online beginners. Exceptions are possible, if the child shows the ability to focus for 30 minutes, and displays an avid enthusiasm for the keyboard.

Local students can use the online option to facilitate attendance when schedules do not permit traveling to the lesson. This is useful for parents who are juggling multiple extra-curricular activities.

Technical Requirements

  • Besides a piano or keyboard, the most important component of your online lesson set-up is a good internet connection. The optimum solution is a hard-wired ethernet cable. Wifi works well. The closer your device is to the hub or to an extender, the better.
  • You can take online lessons using the built-in microphone and camera on your computer, tablet or phone. Ideally, a dedicated webcam and USB microphone provide the best audio and video quality. The Logitech C920s is a popular solution as an affordable webcam with built-in stereo microphones.
  • A number of of my students use the Blue USB microphones at various price points. They sound much better than onboard mics.
  • A  stand or tripod can be useful for holding an iPad, tablet or phone.
  •  I currently use Zoom, but I’m flexible if you have another platform in mind.

How Does it Work?

You can contact me by phone, text or email via the Contact Page. Feel free to ask me questions, or outline your goals regarding learning the piano. We can set up a free 15-20 minute online or in-person session to discuss questions, styles of music, your prior musical experiece and scheduling. You can schedule just one lesson, or a few lessons if you just want to try it out.

Please read the General Policies here.
