Music Lessons For Adults

I accept adults that have previously played the piano or some musical instrument. (including voice) Practicing takes time and learning the piano is a commitment.

Many of my adult students have been interested in jazz. I have been a jazz musician for most of my performing career interspersed with time playing in blues, funk, salsa, rock, and big bands.

I emphasize the fundamentals of piano including technique, tone, and rhythm. I specialize in composition and music theory, providing a foundation for chord voicing and improvisation.

For singers, I also teach accompaniment, particularly “singer-songwriter” “comping” styles. My young students keep me up to date on all the latest pop hits, musicals, movie themes, gaming and anime music, while I have made a study of the historical roots of American music branching from places such as Cuba, Brazil, and New Orleans.

Music Lessons For Kids

My young students range in age from 8 to 18. Students receive a curriculum that is designed for the way they learn and the kind of music they are interested in. The elements of technique, sightreading, theory, and rhythm are common to any style of music. Some of my students focus on classical music, some on jazz, and some on contemporary popular music, particularly anime and gaming.

I also accompany students who like to sing. We make playlists of songs to learn on whatever streaming service they listen to. The students stay inspired searching for new music to bring in and put on their list. I curate their selections and select a song that works on the piano and that they can play at their level.

Whatever kind of music students want to play, I believe in first teaching the fundamentals of piano, providing a foundation for them to express the music of their world.

How It Works

  • Contact me with a short description of your experience, musical background, and styles of music that interest you. If you have specific areas of focus, include those.  Some examples are sightreading, improvising,  accompanying, composition, theory, and songwriting. Accompanying yourself singing with basic chords is perhaps the most accessible way to play songs, similar to learning chords on the guitar.
  • You might make a list of pieces or songs you like, to give me an idea of the direction you want to orient. A list of artists or composers is also helpful.
  • Prepare or bring any music you might already have.
  • We can schedule a free 20min introductory lesson either in-person, or online. If it’s a good fit, we can schedule regular lessons. Young students attend weekly, though some adults are biweekly or by appointment.
  • You must have a practice instrument. you can learn more about recommended practice instruments here.
